INTRODUCING GORDON AMATO

Head Coach Gordon Amato is now in his 2nd  year with the Loyola swimming and water polo programs. In his time here, Coach Gordon teams have won 1 National Catholic championship in swimming and have made it to the MIAA Water Polo Championship game for two consecutive years. Coach Gordon was named Coach of the Year for the National Catholic Championship (2023). Coach Gordon also leads the Loyola Blakefield Aquatics(LBA) club team senior group. Coach Gordon has twin 8-year-old girls that also swim for LBA.

How do you form leaders to serve with and for others on your team?

Swimming is often thought of as an individual sport, but I am teaching the boys that swimming at Loyola is a team sport. Every member of the team participates in a weekly practice that allows us to bond and work on relay exchanges. Swimmers from all different club teams represent Loyola swimming, which can make it challenging since different clubs have different practice times and locations. Having the team participate in weekly practice allows the boys to time to work together and develop a since of team that will carry into dual meets and champions.  The 100-mile swim provides the team the opportunity to serve others by raising money for charity through swimming.

The swim and diving team has four team captains to help lead the squad to a successful season. Jack Holman, Teddy McQuaid, Ethan Daughtery, and Harry Belbot all were selected for their leadership qualities and their willingness to serve others.

How do you develop the mind, body, and spirit of each student-athlete on your team?

To develop a successful swimmer is more than just swimming laps. It takes mental and physical toughness to be a top swimmer. I develop workouts in and out of the pool that will develop physical strength and endurance. I work with swimmers outside of the pool to help develop mental toughness that is needed to stay focused and committed to the sport. I always want every one of my swimmers to feel that they can approach me with questions or concerns and that we can work together to find solutions to any challenge.

How is the aquatics program at Loyola being built to foster a culture of champions?

Loyola Blakefield aquatic programs have a history of success. The swimming and diving team is the most successful program in school history. Swimming and Diving have won more MIAA championships than any other team. The rich history of Loyola Swimming and Diving and the tradition of the team are so important and I am working to continue to win and follow the traditions. Every time a swimmer, diver, or water polo player steps onto the deck, we have the goal of winning. I want everyone that participates in the aquatic programs to have the mind of the champion and to want to be their very best and put forth everything that they have to being a champion. I want to boys to know and understand that they are part of something bigger than themselves and that being a part of the team is adding to the history of Loyola aquatics. One day when they graduate and are an alumni, I want them to return to the pool and say, “I was a part of this, I am a Don and I am proud of what I achieved.”

UPPER SCHOOL

VARSITY

The Varsity Dons are currently 8-1 with more games left in December. This early success has been a total team effort as the Dons have had over 6 games with different starting lineups. The Dons are excited to play in a National Tournament in Salisbury against two out-of-state schools over the holiday break. This season we will have 33 regular season games and as a staff and program our two controllables are our energy and effort. We look forward to our upcoming challenges and seeing plenty of alumni, parents, and supporters in the stands soon. Roll Dons Roll!!

JUNIOR VARSITY

The JV Basketball Dons are 5-1 going into a week filled with away games and hoping to keep the winning streak alive. We have some tough away games before Christmas break, and they will be a big challenge for us as a team. We have had tremendous leadership on and off the court by sophomores Colin Clevenger and Kai Lewis. The JV Dons are very hungry and eager to take the court every day in practice and games and they all work hard to get better and better by the day!

FROSH

The Frosh Dons are 1-1 after a win against Curley and a loss vs Mt. St Joe. The Frosh Dons have 4 games prior to Christmas break and will be working as hard as possible to tackle as many wins as possible. The win against Curley cemented win number 100 for Coach Plunkett's and Tom Shannon's career at Loyola Blakefield.

VARSITY

The Dons are off to a 3-0 start to the 2023-2024 hockey season. With 6 players in the Top 20 in the league in points and a commanding 22 Goals For and 8 Goals Against. The Dons started their season beating 2nd-place Boys Latin 7-4. They then kept Sts. Peter & Paul scoreless in a 5-0 victory--with Junior goaltender, Tommy Bunte, earning his first shutout of the season. From there, the Dons had a decisive win over St. Paul's 10-4. Loyola Junior, Jesse D'Alonzo is 2nd in the league with 12 points and has a league-high 7 assists. SCHEDULES & MORE:

VARSITY

The 2023-24 varsity indoor track team is off to a good start. The Dons competed in league meets at Loyola during the first two weekends and there were many positive signs in multiple events.

The season will start to heat up in late December as the Dons will head to Dickinson College in Pennsylvania for an invitational and then some of the varsity Dons will try to take a bite out of the Big Apple at the Armory Holiday Classic in New York City over Christmas. January and the New Year will see a return to Prince George’s Center for league meets and the MIAA Championships.

The Dons hope to position themselves to place high in the championship meet and then some of the top Dons will move on to hopefully qualify for Indoor Nationals in March.

Junior Varsity

The coaching staff is pleased with the energy and the effort of the junior varsity indoor track and field team. The first part of the track and field season for the younger athletes is about trying different events and seeing what events suit the athletes best. There were many bright spots in the first two league meets at Loyola.

There will be two scrimmage meets over break where the young Dons will start to hone in on what their best events are, and in January we move onto Prince George’s Center with league meets and the championship meet. The coaching staff is excited about what the possibilities are with the junior varsity track and field athletes.

SCHEDULES & MORE:

Varsity

In a season with a 4-7 record, maybe the team’s best performance was a 6-1 loss in early December to a strong Squashwise team, as five of the matches went the full five games. It was a match that on paper doesn’t immediately seem close, but both the effort and mental fortitude exhibited is exactly what both the players and coaches see as important for growing throughout the season. The team has had to battle through injuries and sickness, rarely playing at full strength. Players, when needed, have stepped up. Our #1 Graham Fields has faced superior competition and held his own. Our #3/4 Will McDonald has been a gamer, winning both convincingly and playing clear superior opponents tough. Aiden Treacy has been lower in the top seven and through his hustle and court smarts beaten seemingly stronger opponents. Furthermore, five of the team’s seven losses occurred on Saturday, December 9, in a six-team robin-robin day of intense squash. Even with no team victories, everyone improved over the course of the day.
The team heads toward the Christmas break aiming for a .500 record. The break should give the players a chance to get healthy as the team aims for peaking in mid-February and the MIAA playoffs and the Nationals in Philadelphia.

Junior Varsity

The JV squad has been led by a group of freshmen, led by Connor Doehne, Charlie Compton, Henry Poe, and Luis Navas-Miguloa, all playing in the top seven. With their enthusiasm and veteran leadership from Ben Andrews, the team is currently 2-3, losing tough matches to Squashwise and McDonogh, both 4-3. While winning is important, this team understands that learning and loving the game, mixed with fun, is the goal of the season. Everyone of the 13 members of the team has improved dramatically, literally from practice to practice and match to match. While there’s a wide range of talents and abilities, there’s no question that each member of the team contributes to the overall sense of camaraderie and enthusiasm. Their eagerness to work hard, listen to coaching suggestions, and commitment to each other speaks well for the rest of the season, as well as the future of the program in the years to come.

VARSITY

The Varsity wrestling team is off to another strong start. The team is currently ranked #4 in the area in the Baltimore Sun poll. We have a solid nucleus of experienced wrestlers along with up and coming underclassmen. The team is led by several talented wrestlers including:

Sr Judah Aybar: #1 ranked 150lb in MD, Senior captain and returning MIAA Champ – Clarion Commit
Jr Luke Randazzo: #1 HWT in MD, MIAA Runner Up Junior
Jr Cayden Farver: #6 120 lb in MD, Returning MIAA Champ
Soph Jayden Jackson: #2 113lb in MD, Returning MIAA Champ and Prep All American

The team heads to Beast of the East this weekend, which I widely considered to be the toughest High School wrestling tournament in the country. As we start to get some of our injured wrestlers back over Christmas break, the team is ready to make a run for a MIAA Championship.

JUNIOR VARSITY

JV wrestlers won The Raymond B. Oliver tournament by a landslide. They outscored the second place team by 120 points. The following week they placed third in the Ken Berlett Senior Classic with a total of 203 points. The JV team is competing well in the MIAA.

BASKETBALL - 8th GRADE

The 8th grade basketball team is 0-4 after a quick start to the year. It has taken us a little while to get going to start games, but our 4th quarters have been great. We will be looking to put together a run before the Holidays and pick up our first win soon.

BASKETBALL - 7th GRADE

The 7th grade Dons are off to a 1-2 start on the season. The Dons traveled to Gilman on November 29th to start the season. We fought hard but lost 39-20. Kunmi Edmondson-Deigh had a team high 10 points while James Hunter added 9 points. On December 5th the Dons returned home to host the Eagles of McDonogh. We came out of the gates slow but fought back with a chance to win at the buzzer but missed the game winning three. We lost 34-32. Olsen Yetso had the hot hand and lead all scorers with 13 points, while Luke Szeliga added 9 points. Finally on December 8th in front of a loud and packed 4 court gym Loyola got its first win of the season over Calvert 31-28. We were down 24-6 at halftime. In the second half we only gave up 2 points with amazing defense and rebounding. All week the team worked on foul shots, and it paid off. We went 6-6 in the final minute to get the victory. Coach Showe said “To see these boys celebrate and how much this crowd was behind them just shows why coaching at Loyola is so much fun”.

Swimming

The Middle School Dons swimmers are off to a hot start. On November 29th, the Dons traveled to McDonogh and won each of the eleven events on the way to a 94-58 win over the Eagles. Our next three meets are all in January when we will host McDonogh and Gilman, while also traveling to meet the Greyhounds on Roland Avenue. Until then, we are practicing hard and continuing to improve in hopes of attaining another undefeated season.

WRESTLING

Middle school wrestling has had a great season so far. Athletes competed in the Peter’s Performance Gym against St. Ignatius and St. Paul’s. The boys traveled to Gilman the following week and wrestled well. The boys can transfer skills learned in the mat room and apply them in competitions.
